Welcome to Soft Serve, our cosy corner of the internet where film and culture are served with feeling, flavour and a sense of fun. Unapologetically feminine, we don’t take ourselves too seriously but still have a lot to say.
I’m Oriana, one half of your co-editing duo, and over a year ago, I started The Film Club. What began as a space for women (including trans and non-binary folks who relate to the female experience) to watch, talk, and connect over film has grown into one of the most fulfilling parts of my life. I’ve had the honour of meeting brilliant, curious, culture-loving women with big opinions and soft hearts. And honestly? Their takes deserve to be read!
Around the same time, I was quietly running a Substack—full of big ideas, half-drafted essays, and not nearly enough time. Planning events and running a community takes a lot of love (and hours), so I thought: what if we opened it up? What if the publication wasn’t mine, but ours?
I’m Fay, the other half of our dynamic duo. A film fanatic who has treasured being a member of The Film Club. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing the brilliant opinions, critical commentary, and unique perspectives of the women who make up The Film Club. Our voices deserve to be heard, to be unapologetically ourselves, and to make a mark on the art that moves us.
And so: Soft Serve. A re-launched space for our community to contribute as regular writers. A shared page for shared passions. A publishing home for voices that are thoughtful, weird, emotional, and refreshingly unpolished.
What Is Soft Serve?

Soft Serve is a community-led publication rooted in cinema but stretching into anything our contributors care deeply about—TV shows, music videos, snack aisles, internet spirals, and beyond. We believe cultural commentary doesn’t need to be cold or detached to be smart.
We like it soft. We like it strange. We like it served with feelings.
Why We’re Writing to You (Yes, You):
Because you’ve probably written thoughts in your Notes app that deserved an audience.
Because we believe the personal is critical and the critical is personal.
Because we want to build something that’s less about algorithms and more about community.
We made Soft Serve for the cinephile who gets emotional over lighting.
For the critic who can’t stop using the word “vibe.”
For the culture consumer who doesn’t just watch but feels.
